The University of Seville is facing a budget adjustment plan aimed at saving 16 million euros, which includes reducing class groups and closing centers in the afternoons. However, these proposals have generated significant disagreement among some academic officials, who are warning about their potential negative consequences.
“"Without evaluating the causes that have led us to this serious budgetary situation, and from a sense of loyalty and willingness to collaborate fully with the University of Seville and its governing team, I cannot agree at all with the restrictive measures that have been proposed to the deans and center directors, especially regarding the reduction of groups."
The main concern lies in student concentration, which could lead to classroom overcrowding, a situation that, according to critics, harks back to the 1980s. This scenario, particularly in faculties like Law, could negatively impact the quality of university education and hinder student growth and the offering of excellent degree programs.
Another point of contention is the impact on teaching staff, especially on contracts. It is warned that staff reductions would be unfair and disproportionate, and contrary to the teaching needs of some departments. The Conference of Deans and Directors of the US has already expressed its discomfort and requested to know the specific criteria for the adjustment.
In light of this situation, academic officials have expressed their willingness to collaborate with the Rectorate to find alternative ways to improve the budgetary crisis, aiming to ensure that the adjustments do not compromise the promotion of accredited faculty and the continuity of interim faculty, nor diminish the quality and excellence of public university education.
