The future regional indoor swimming pool in Torre Cardela has begun construction with the laying of the first stone, an event presided over by the president of the Provincial Council of Granada, Francis Rodríguez. The project, with a budget of 1,406,999.99 euros, will be completed within eight months and aims to provide year-round service to the municipalities of the Montes Orientales region.
This new sports infrastructure, promoted by the Provincial Council's governing team, seeks to ensure that all residents of the province, regardless of their municipality, have access to the same services. The Torre Cardela pool will be the first of its kind in a Granada municipality with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants and will eliminate the need for residents to travel to other towns like Guadix or the Metropolitan Area.
The Provincial Council president highlighted the facility's importance in promoting healthy lifestyles and improving citizens' quality of life, fostering community and socialization through sports. "Sport is health, but it is also coexistence and socialization," stated Rodríguez, emphasizing that the project is pioneering and demonstrates that institutional collaboration can turn dreams into reality.
The mayor of Torre Cardela, María Vera, described the day as "very important" for the town and the region, noting that the infrastructure "will open future opportunities." She thanked the Provincial Council for its commitment to smaller municipalities, stating that "rural municipalities are a real priority within provincial policies."
The new pool is designed as a single-story building with a sloped roof. It will feature a main pavilion for the pool area and an adjacent section for administrative zones and changing rooms. The basement level will house technical galleries, and the main floor will include the entrance, reception area, and various changing rooms (women's, men's, accessible, and children's).
