Before the distinction was presented, the political leader signed the guest book and greeted various invited personalities. The mayor of Madrid, in his speech, highlighted the honoree's trajectory in the fight for her people's freedom, calling the day “historic” and the key “the greatest honor a city can bestow upon a visitor.”

With the Golden Key in her hands, the Venezuelan leader underscored the object's symbolism as an “opening to freedom” for her nation, quoting Cervantes: “for freedom, as for honor, one can and should risk one's life,” and concluding with the hope that “very soon we will be able to breathe in freedom.”
