The province of Seville is participating in the celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites on April 18, featuring special activities at the archaeological sites of Carmona and Itálica, aiming to connect citizens with their heritage.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (Icomos), an organization affiliated with Unesco, established April 18 as the International Day for Monuments and Sites in 1982. This initiative aims to highlight the importance of cultural heritage and the necessity of its protection for future generations. Each year, museums and cultural spaces across Andalusia organize various activities to commemorate this date, including guided tours and workshops, with the goal of promoting the conservation of the region's vast and diverse cultural legacy.
Throughout this weekend, several Andalusian enclaves will open their doors to the public. In the province of Seville, the archaeological sites of Carmona and Itálica, the latter located in Santiponce, will be the main attractions. The Carmona site will offer a guided tour focusing on the Roman ritual of death, while Itálica has prepared a family workshop on the restoration of Roman paintings.
At the Carmona Archaeological Complex, the activity on the Roman ritual of death is designed for general public participation. The event will take place at the complex itself at 11:00 AM. To attend, it is essential to reserve a spot by calling 600143632.
Meanwhile, the Itálica Archaeological Complex, under the theme “Living Heritage and Emergency Response,” will focus on the importance of preserving cultural heritage. They have organized a family workshop called “Restoring Roman Paintings,” where children can learn basic conservation techniques by repairing a Roman stucco, reassembling fragments, and reintegrating color. This free activity, with limited capacity for 20 minors accompanied by a maximum of two adults per family, will take place on Saturday, April 18, at 11:00 AM and will last 90 minutes. Reservations are managed through the ARES portal.
Coinciding with these dates, World Art Day is also celebrated, established by Unesco in 2019 and commemorated every April 15, honoring the birth of Leonardo da Vinci. For this reason, some Andalusian museums and the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage (IAPH) have scheduled activities to highlight the relevance of art in society and foster innovation, creativity, and cultural diversity.
