The stance of the Archbishop of Seville, Monsignor Saiz Meneses, has been publicly expressed through a social media message, where he criticizes the Spanish Government's initiative to reform the Constitution to include the right to abortion. According to the prelate, this measure, which proposes adding a section to article 43 on health protection, undermines the lives of the most vulnerable human beings.
“"Abortion, which destroys the lives of the most innocent and defenseless human beings, is an abominable crime, according to Revelation, the Magisterium of the Church, and reason. From conception, the embryo is an original and biologically autonomous being, endowed with an internal project that develops until it reaches its full maturity."
Several brotherhoods in Seville have joined the archbishop's declaration, showing their support for the defense of life. Among the first to speak out is the Cristo del Amor brotherhood, popularly known as “La Borriquita”. Subsequently, other highly relevant brotherhoods such as Macarena and Esperanza de Triana have also issued unequivocal statements to the same effect.
This positioning by the brotherhoods and the archbishop occurs in a context where Seville's Holy Week mobilizes thousands of Nazarenes and brothers, and where the Church seeks to reaffirm its principles against government policies. The initiative also highlights the role of conscientious objector doctors, who, according to the text, risk their job stability by refusing to perform abortions.
