The establishment Malandro, located in the Arenal area, has unveiled an initiative designed to enrich the calendar of recognitions during the Feria de Abril. These accolades will be divided into two main categories: the award for the Breakthrough Bullfighter of the Season in Seville and the award for the Relevant Personality in Defense of Bullfighting.
Both awards will bear the names of two iconic figures from the bullfighting world. The breakthrough bullfighter award will honor the memory of Pepín Martín Vázquez, a bullfighter from Seville immortalized in cinema by the film Currito de la Cruz and renowned for his mastery of natural bullfighting. Meanwhile, the award for the distinguished personality will be named after Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, a figure who transcended the bullfighting sphere, also being a writer and patron of the Generation of '27.
“"They are born with the vocation to recognize excellence, effort, and commitment to bullfighting."
The jury, composed of a group of experts and connoisseurs of bullfighting art, has already held its first meeting to evaluate potential candidates. The names of the winners are expected to be announced in June, while the award ceremony is scheduled for late September, coinciding with the Feria de San Miguel.
This initiative, according to its promoters, is a way to pay tribute to the bullfighting festival and highlight its contribution to Spanish culture, reaffirming the restaurant's commitment to Sevillian traditions and aficionados.
