The traditional aesthetic of the Feria de Abril, which includes tight buns and the abundant use of hairsprays, can take a toll on hair health. A hair surgery specialist has warned about the consequences of these practices, ranging from temporary hair loss to dehydration of the hair fiber.
“"Tight buns and the overuse of hairsprays during the Feria de Abril cause hair loss."
Among the main risk factors are prolonged tension from hairstyles, which creates a physical load on the hair root and can cause follicular inflammation. Likewise, the accumulation of hairspray and fixative components dehydrates the cuticle, making hair more fragile. External elements such as pollution, UV radiation, and the dust from the albero also alter the scalp's microbiome and oxidize keratin.
The expert also pointed out common mistakes during the Feria, such as sleeping with hair styled, overusing styling products, or styling wet hair. The combination of tight hairstyles with wet hair reduces resistance to breakage, while using fixatives with heat tools can caramelize resins on the fiber, promoting fractures.
To mitigate these effects, it is recommended to vary the anchor points of the hairstyle to avoid constant tension on the same follicles. It is also crucial to apply a serum or heat protectant before heat exposure and, fundamentally, to wash hair daily to remove residues and products. After the Feria, hair recovery can be accelerated with deep hydration, gentle enzymatic exfoliation, and avoiding heat tools for at least a week. In cases of telogen effluvium, specific treatments such as platelet-rich plasma or medications can accelerate hair recovery.
