The prospect of Sevilla FC leveraging the World Cup stage to facilitate the sale of Swiss players Rubén Vargas and Djibril Sow is diminishing given current circumstances. The Andalusian club, facing financial challenges, had counted on these transfers to bolster its finances during the upcoming winter transfer window.
Rubén Vargas, who was seen as a key player for a potential sale, has been one of the season's disappointments. Injuries have hampered his consistency, with a relapse in January preventing him from completing a full match since March. Since his return, he has only contributed two assists and has not regained the form shown earlier in the season or the previous one.
The 27-year-old winger's physical issues have also impacted his involvement with the Swiss national team. Vargas had to leave a training session and was rested for the final friendly against Australia. While national team coach Murat Yakin considers him important, his current 'delicate' physical condition raises questions about his optimal performance at the upcoming World Cup.
Meanwhile, Djibril Sow has also seen a reduction in his playing time. Despite achieving his best season statistically with five goals and four assists, he has started recent friendlies from the bench. Switzerland's potential shift to a 3-4-3 formation, with Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler likely to occupy the central midfield roles, suggests a secondary role for the Sevilla player in the tournament.
This situation presents a significant setback for Sevilla FC. The uncertainty surrounding Vargas's fitness and Sow's potential reserve status complicates the club's objective of generating revenue through their sales, a crucial aspect for the team's finances this season.
