A court in Seville has ordered the provisional imprisonment of four individuals allegedly belonging to a Georgian mafia cell that was breaking into homes in the Andalusian capital. The arrest occurred last week when the National Police caught the suspects in the act of robbing an apartment on Juan Sebastián Elcano street, in the Los Remedios neighborhood. Subsequent investigations have clarified their involvement in at least three other burglaries.
The arrested individuals, three men and one woman, were caught in the early hours of August 12th following an alert call from a neighbor. Officers seized a considerable amount of money and jewelry that the detainees were carrying, believed to be from other robberies. The Citizen Security Brigade made the initial intervention, and later the Robbery Unit analyzed the seized items, managing to identify three other burglarized apartments thanks to the owners recognizing their jewelry.
The implicated individuals are accused of at least four counts of burglary. This factor was decisive for the prosecution to request their provisional imprisonment. Police do not rule out that the gang may have committed more robberies, the authorship of which has not yet been proven. The gang's activity had caused alarm among residents of Los Remedios, where a similar robbery had occurred days earlier on Fernando IV street.
This is not the only Georgian mafia cell active in Seville this summer. Last week, police reported the arrest of three individuals for home burglaries in Sevilla Este, also part of a traveling group of Georgians who had targeted 18 homes for burglaries.
These criminals use silicone threads or plastic markers on doors to ensure residences are empty, preferring burglaries in unoccupied homes to avoid harsher penalties associated with violence or intimidation. Police have asked citizens to report any such markers found on their doors to 091 without touching them.
To access the properties, they used specialized tools such as lock picks. Similar equipment was seized from another group of Georgians arrested in Sevilla Este, who had rented a property in the Andalusian capital.
