The future of David Vizcaíno, sporting director, is being debated between continuing his work at Zamora CF or accepting an offer from Recreativo de Huelva. The final decision will depend on the outcome of the current season and whether Zamora achieves promotion to the silver division.
Recreativo de Huelva, known as 'El Decano' (The Dean), aims to return to the bronze division after their relegation last season and narrowly missed out on the promotion 'play-off'. To strengthen the project for the upcoming season, the Huelva-based club has set its sights on the Almería-born director to lead the creation of a squad capable of achieving their goal.
Vizcaíno boasts an extensive career in football. Almost twenty years ago, he began his journey at Almería as Head of Youth Scouting, overseeing the club's academy. He later moved to Málaga CF to perform a similar role. During his time at the Malaguista club, he had two spells, the second following a two-year stint in the sporting direction of Liverpool FC.
During his time at the English club, Vizcaíno was a key figure in the signing of Philippe Coutinho for eight million euros, a deal that years later resulted in his sale to FC Barcelona for 135 million. He also facilitated the arrival of Iago Aspas at Anfield, although his performance was limited by competition from strikers like Luis Suárez and Sturridge.
After returning to Málaga CF as team coordinator, Vizcaíno joined the sporting direction of Deportivo Alavés, achieving league survival. His international experience led him to Croatia (NK Rudes) and France (FC Sochaux), before returning to Spain to join CD Badajoz, where he assembled a team that reached the final of the Segunda B to Segunda División 'play-off'. His last role before Zamora was at San Fernando CD, where the team remained in Primera Federación for two seasons.
This year, Vizcaíno joined Zamora CF with the objective of qualifying the team for the promotion 'play-off' to the Second Division. He has successfully assembled a squad that finished the season in third position. Despite facing a tough opponent in the semi-finals, Villarreal CF, who won the first leg 2-0, Zamora still has the return match at the Estadio Ruta de la Plata, where they have only suffered four defeats.
The Zamora club officially announced David Vizcaíno's continuation as Sporting Director for the 2025/26 season, highlighting his national and international experience as key to the entity's growth. However, the potential arrival of the Almería-native at Recreativo de Huelva was considered after Mario Fuentes, sporting director of Cádiz CF, rejected the offer. Vizcaíno's signing by 'El Decano' will depend on Zamora's results in the promotion phase.
