The matador, seriously injured last Monday in the Maestranza de Sevilla bullring, spent the night with little sleep but without major discomfort, after undergoing emergency surgery in the bullring's infirmary. He was subsequently transferred to the ICU of Viamed-Santa Ángela Hospital in Seville.
According to the medical report, the goring by a bull's horn in the rectum, with a trajectory of about 10 centimeters, partially injured the anal sphincter muscles and caused a 1.5-centimeter perforation in the posterior wall of the rectum. The delicate nature of the area and the risk of infection have necessitated intravenous antibiotics and, in the coming hours, parenteral nutrition.
“"It has undoubtedly been the most painful goring I have suffered in my career; I was in immense pain and also very scared because I saw that the bull had caught me and I thought I was bleeding a lot. When I arrived at the infirmary and saw that the bleeding was minimal, I relaxed considerably. But it hurt terribly."
The recovery process is expected to be slow, with the wound left open to heal from within and constantly monitored to prevent complications in a difficult-to-treat area. The bullfighter was caught by the fourth bull of the afternoon, an animal from Hermanos García Jiménez, named Clandestino, which knocked him down in the first third and then caught him again on the ground.
The bullfighter's next scheduled engagement is on May 10 in Valladolid, alongside Roca Rey and Juan Ortega. His subsequent dates, May 15 and 16 at the Feria del Caballo in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), had already sold out all tickets before the incident.
