The departure of Francisco Góngora from the mayorship of El Ejido, prompted by his appointment as delegate of the Junta de Andalucía government in Almería, has generated anticipation about who will definitively occupy the position. The succession process will begin this Thursday, July 23, with an extraordinary plenary session at 9 AM where the resignation will be officially announced.
From that moment, José Francisco Rivera, the current first deputy mayor, government team spokesperson, and councilor for Finance, will assume the interim mayorship. Rivera was born in Berja in 1972.
Before the stipulated 10 calendar days pass, a new plenary session will be convened to elect the next mayor. Góngora has indicated that the decision regarding his successor rests with the Popular Party, to which he belongs.
Although not officially announced, names such as Julia Ibáñez, Ángel Escobar, and Manuel Martínez are being mentioned as potential candidates to succeed Góngora, who has held the mayoral office for the past 15 years.
