The party has labeled the incident, which occurred during the plenary session on Monday, April 20, as a "spectacle filled with hatred and xenophobia" directed at the immigrant community. The controversy arose from a motion presented by Vox, urging the City Council not to renew the contract with the Ejido Hotel for housing immigrants.
According to Izquierda Unida, Vox's proposal was based on an alarmist discourse that deliberately sought to criminalize people in extremely vulnerable situations. A party spokesperson noted that these are asylum seekers who strictly comply with the law, awaiting the resolution of their international protection applications.
“"Using their situation to stir up fear is a major political irresponsibility."
For Izquierda Unida, such interventions only seek to fracture social coexistence in El Ejido, fostering rejection of the foreign population, particularly those of African origin. The party has supported the decision of the PSOE Municipal Group to abandon the plenary session, calling the situation a "circus."
Furthermore, Izquierda Unida has condemned the "complicity" of the Popular Party's governing team for allowing the plenary hall to become a platform for speeches that, according to the party, border on hate crimes. They have denounced the partisan use of institutions to attack fundamental human rights under an exclusionary rhetoric.
In the face of institutional blocking strategies and administrative hurdles that only lead to greater vulnerability, Izquierda Unida reaffirms that migration policy must be based on the recognition of rights, effective integration, and equal treatment. A spokesperson emphasized the importance of local institutions working to improve the lives of all residents, regardless of origin, to prevent El Ejido from being newsworthy for institutional racism.
