The Government of Andalusia has requested administrations and citizens to intensify preventive actions against mosquitoes, with special attention to areas where the circulation of the West Nile virus has been confirmed, such as Fuengirola and Las Lagunas (Mijas). Recommendations are aimed at the entire population, emphasizing increased precautions for the most vulnerable individuals, to prevent bites and reduce breeding grounds for these insects.
The General Directorate of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Planning advises the use of registered topical mosquito repellents, following the instructions on the packaging. It is also recommended to cover most of the body with light-colored clothing, especially during peak mosquito activity hours, and to avoid intense scents from perfumes or soaps that may attract them.
For home protection, it is suggested to install mosquito nets on doors and windows, and to use household insecticides or environmental repellents if necessary. Additionally, it is recommended to turn off non-essential lights, as they can attract mosquitoes.
A key measure is to prevent the formation of water accumulations, which serve as larval breeding sites. Maintaining swimming pools, tanks, and washbasins in good condition is urged, along with periodically emptying containers like pots, buckets, or toys that collect water in patios and gardens.
In livestock farms, it is advised to frequently renew animal drinking water, check for leaks, and eliminate puddles. Repairing leaking taps and troughs is also recommended.
The main health recommendations include: using registered repellents, wearing light-colored clothing that covers the body, avoiding strong scents, installing mosquito nets, using insecticides, turning off unnecessary lights, emptying accumulated water from containers, maintaining pools and tanks, renewing animal water troughs, and repairing water leaks.
