International Tourism Boosts Hotel Stays in Malaga

Fewer travelers but more overnight stays: UK, USA, and Germany lead growth in the city.

The city of Malaga concluded the first half of 2026 with 823,065 hotel travelers and 1,747,146 overnight stays, a 2.73% increase from the previous year, despite a 4.97% decrease in visitors.

The city of Malaga has recorded an increase in hotel overnight stays during the first half of 2026, reaching 1,747,146 nights, representing a 2.73% rise compared to the same period in 2025. However, the number of hotel travelers has decreased by 4.97%, standing at 823,065.
These figures, from the Hotel Occupancy Survey by the National Statistics Institute, indicate a prolongation of stays, with an average of 2.12 days, surpassing the 1.96 days from the previous year.
The international market continues to be the primary driver of the hotel sector in the city. Out of the 823,065 registered travelers, 552,766 were international. Overnight stays by foreign residents totaled 1,281,843, an 8.25% increase from the first half of 2025, accounting for three out of every four hotel overnight stays.
The United Kingdom remains the leading international source market, with 89,565 travelers and 235,697 overnight stays between January and June, marking a 1.19% increase in travelers and a 12.17% rise in hotel nights. The United States ranks as the second market, contributing 41,090 travelers and 90,546 overnight stays in the semi-annual period.
Germany also shows notable growth, with 53,606 travelers and 121,751 overnight stays, up 9.51% and 15.67% respectively. Other significant markets include Italy, the Netherlands, and France, which saw a 7.89% increase in overnight stays during June.
Regarding the average stay in June, the Netherlands leads with 2.79 days, followed by the United Kingdom (2.68 days) and Germany (2.67 days).
Within the domestic market, Andalusia continues to be the main originating autonomous community in June, with 17,760 travelers, followed by the Community of Madrid.
The month of June 2026 recorded the highest room occupancy rate for the semester (88.28%), surpassing June 2025's 83.36%, and the highest average stay at 2.21 days.
