The energy company Statkraft has decided to halt the promotion of two wind farms, Lagunillas in the province of Málaga and Arrebol in Cádiz. The decision comes after receiving unfavorable resolutions from the competent environmental and administrative authorities, leading the company to withdraw from both initiatives.
Collectively, both wind farms were projected to have a capacity of nearly 100 megawatts (MW), enough to supply approximately 50,000 homes. However, the inability to overcome environmental and administrative procedures has led Statkraft to abandon the projects. The company states that "both projects ultimately did not meet the necessary conditions to continue their development, after evaluating various specific technical, environmental, and territorial factors for each case."
The Lagunillas park, planned in Málaga with a capacity of 65.7 MW, would have affected municipalities such as Álora, Antequera, and Valle de Abdalajís. An unfavorable environmental report identified a significant impact on biodiversity, particularly the risk of collision for protected birds of prey and bats, in addition to negative effects from noise, shadow flicker, and potential hydrological and archaeological risks. Faced with the requirement for an ordinary environmental impact assessment procedure, the subsidiary Statkraft Iberia Tres requested the withdrawal of the processing, which was accepted and definitively archived, compounded by the expiration of grid access permits in May 2026.
Meanwhile, the Arrebol wind farm, located in Tarifa (Cádiz), also faced rejection due to environmental incompatibility. After an initial preliminary approval in February 2025, the company reduced the capacity to 36 MW with five wind turbines. However, an unfavorable report from the Territorial Delegation of Sustainability and Environment in Cádiz in January 2026 concluded "environmental incompatibility." The company requested the file be closed due to environmental unviability, and subsequently, the expiration of access and connection permits by Red Eléctrica de España was communicated.
Despite withdrawing from these two projects, Statkraft maintains its commitment to the Cádiz region by repowering its existing wind farms, Pasada de Tejeda and La Herrería, both in Tarifa, with an investment of nearly 70 million euros. These facilities, operational for over 20 years, were originally promoted by Enerfín, now integrated into Statkraft.
