The film The Sweetest, directed by Laïla Marrakchi and featuring actress Itsaso Arana, is presented in the Un Certain Regard section, a space dedicated to innovative and daring cinematic proposals. This selection highlights the Spanish presence at the festival, beyond figures such as Pedro Almodóvar or Rodrigo Sorogoyen.
The film explores the experiences of a group of Moroccan women working as strawberry pickers in Andalusia, offering an intimate and human vision of their stories, without exclusively focusing on the social aspect. Cantos's participation in Cannes represents a new milestone in his career.
Fran Cantos's career has seen a remarkable rise in recent years, both in film and television. At the recent Malaga Festival, two films in which he had supporting roles premiered: Altas capacidades and Yo no moriré de amor, the latter winning the Biznaga de Oro for Best Spanish Film. On the small screen, he has appeared in series such as La promesa, La unidad, Paraíso, Las abogadas and soon in Sira.
Until recently, Fran Cantos's prestige had been primarily built on the stage, in theater.
Before his foray into film and television, Cantos built his reputation in theater, training at the William Layton Theater Laboratory in Madrid. He collaborated with prominent directors such as Miguel del Arco, Gon Ramos, José Padilla, and Álvaro Lavín. He was awarded the Union of Actors and Actresses Award for Best Supporting Actor in Theater in 2020 for Jauría and in 2025 for El Alcalde de Zalamea, solidifying his artistic versatility.
