Families at a Málaga school protest cuts to early childhood education lines

Families at CEIP Neill in Málaga have voiced their concern and rejection of the Junta de Andalucía's decision to reduce a 3-year-old early childhood education line for the upcoming school year, considering it a cut that will affect the quality of education at the center.

The educational community of CEIP Neill, located in the Cruz del Humilladero neighborhood, has expressed its dissatisfaction with the Junta de Andalucía's proposal to maintain only one 3-year-old early childhood education line for the 2026/2027 academic year. According to the parents' association, the school is experiencing increasing demand, with 32 current applications, many from families who have lived in the neighborhood for a long time.

The situation is exacerbated by the fact that among the applications, there are three children with special educational needs who require more personalized attention. The parents' association has held meetings with the Delegation of Education, but the response has been negative, suggesting the relocation of students to other centers in the area.

In response to this situation, parents, grandparents, and residents of the Tira Pichón area in Cruz del Humilladero have planned a demonstration for Tuesday, May 12. Various unions have joined this mobilization, supporting the demand for quality public education. The educational community aims for their protest to extend beyond the classrooms and reach the Ministry of Education.
For its part, the Territorial Delegation for Educational Development and Vocational Training has stated that the decision is based on «strictly technical, objective, and legally established criteria». They explain that the allocation of units is carried out through a comprehensive analysis of the schooling needs of each area, not solely by the specific demand of one center.
In the case of CEIP Neill, the center has an initial authorized offer of 22 places for 3-year-olds, and although 31 valid applications were registered, admission process data for the 2026/2027 academic year indicate that within a one-kilometer radius, there are 132 available places for 100 applications, leaving 32 vacancies in the area. The delegation assures that there is no shortage of public school places and that no applicant with siblings already enrolled in the center will be left without a place.
