After finishing the league season in ninth place and considering the team movements in the EuroLeague, the current landscape ensures the Malaga club's continuity in FIBA's main continental competition. This will be Unicaja's fifth consecutive campaign in the BCL.
The end of the season on May 29th shifts the focus to the upcoming season, which is expected to bring squad changes and potentially a new head coach. However, participation in competitions like the BCL is now a certainty.
Unicaja will not compete in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup or the Supercopa Endesa. Failing to retain their European title in this season's BCL prevents them from qualifying for the Intercontinental Cup. They will also miss the Supercopa Endesa in Badalona, which will feature Valencia Basket, Kosner Baskonia, Asisa Joventut, and the Liga Endesa champion.
The confirmation of La Laguna Tenerife's move to the EuroCup and the allocation of spots by the ACB League for the 2026/27 BCL, which could increase to five or six, have cleared up any doubts about the Malaga team's presence. Currently, UCAM, Joventut, Surne Bilbao, and Unicaja would have direct berths, while Breogán would compete in preliminary rounds.
The Malaga club aims to make history in the Basketball Champions League, seeking to become the first team to win the trophy three times. The 2026/2027 season presents a new opportunity to achieve this goal.
