The municipal group's co-spokesperson for Con Málaga, Toni Morillas, highlighted the "David versus Goliath struggle" of the Vega Mestanza residents against the construction of the Málaga North wastewater treatment plant. Morillas lamented the "double damage" caused by the Junta de Andalucía and the Málaga City Council.
The TSJA ruling, which sides with the residents for the second time, considers that the enclave, of "high ecological and landscape value", is not the ideal location for the plant. The Junta de Andalucía has been ordered to pay costs.
“"This is the second ruling the residents of Vega Mestanza have won."
Con Málaga was the first group to request the project's halt in "the last remaining meadow within the municipality of Málaga". Morillas stated that "time and justice" have vindicated the residents' perseverance, successfully stopping the project.
The "terrible irresponsibility" of the Junta de Andalucía and the Málaga City Council is pointed out for approving the plant on land cultivated with thousands of citrus trees. It is criticized that the time lost in judicial battles could have been used to find alternative locations for the Guadalhorce wastewater treatment plant.
Morillas lamented the "stubbornness of the PP" and the lack of "care and affection" towards the Vega Mestanza. The TSJA ruling indicates an inadequate assessment of the environmental impact, suggesting the political decision was based on "economic criteria".
“"As this new TSJA ruling corroborates, they have won, and the Junta de Andalucía will have to seek solutions for the Guadalhorce water purification issue to be resolved."
The residents were congratulated for their "titanic struggle, both socially and in the courts", which has resulted in the victory confirmed by the TSJA, compelling the Junta de Andalucía to find new solutions for the purification of Guadalhorce waters.
