In a city like Málaga, with high population flow, an invisible group exists: those without a roof over their heads. In response, the association Casa Hogar de la Esperanza has established a 180-square-meter day center. Its mission is to provide essential services such as showers, bathrooms, aid, and attention to those most in need, alongside common areas like a patio and a television room.
Fernando Ortega, the association's president, notes that many individuals end up in this situation due to adverse life circumstances and need to be seen as people, not as obstacles. In the El Palo area, he estimates over 25 homeless individuals, many facing mental health or addiction issues. The center, sustained by donations and support from the parish and foundations, offers them not only hygiene and food but also administrative, health, and social assistance, thanks to a team of professionals and volunteers.
“"Ultimately, they need to be seen as people, not as a nuisance or something in the way. They are not on the street by choice, but because life has hit them hard, with severe blows, and anyone can end up there."
The initiative, which began two years ago following a Christian retreat, has evolved from volunteer outreach with Cáritas to establishing a stable resource in collaboration with the parish and neighborhood associations. The goal is to offer comprehensive support, defining the situation as "street-dwelling" rather than "homeless" to emphasize its transient nature.
Currently, the day center assists approximately twenty-five individuals daily who sleep outdoors, primarily in the area between Baños del Carmen and El Palo. The association has achieved significant results, helping at least seven people find employment, housing, or access to rehabilitation centers. Although the City Council collaborates through resources like Puerta Única, they are often overwhelmed.
An example of overcoming adversity is Hassan Akoukjdid, who after years of living on the streets and battling addiction, found support at Casa de la Esperanza to begin a recovery journey. His testimony highlights the importance of acceptance, forgiveness, and faith, and his desire to reunite with his son after eight months "clean."

Ezequiel Ribera, the association's coordinator, describes the work as "enriching," despite the challenges. He emphasizes the importance of creating a "living gospel" by accompanying individuals in their basic, personal, and spiritual needs, making them feel part of a family to facilitate their exit from street life.
