The Cofradía Sacramental del Rocío de Málaga has unveiled the World Cross, the new wooden cross that will accompany Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno de los Pasos. The presentation took place last Saturday, April 18, at the Andalusian Tourism Auditorium, on Compañía Street, and is part of the events leading up to the 50th anniversary of the image's blessing, to be celebrated in 2027.
The event, with limited capacity, brought together brotherhood members, devotees, and cofrade representatives, who enjoyed a performance by the Málaga Municipal Music Band. During the ceremony, an art historian provided details about the brotherhood's origins and the significance of the new cross. The elder brother and the vice-secretary also spoke, with the latter presenting the commemorative anniversary poster.
The World Cross is the result of a collaborative effort by five Andalusian artists, some of whom are members of the brotherhood itself. The arboreal-shaped design measures 3.55 meters in height and 1.72 meters in width, carved from cedar wood. Its irregular and darkened finish deliberately evokes the Tree of Life, with a structure that draws from Andalusian Baroque and Neapolitan and Venetian crosses from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The main carving was executed by a renowned artisan, while another sculptor was responsible for the fourteen reliefs adorning the cross, representing the Stations of the Via Crucis. The main figures stand out in higher relief, creating a depth effect. The goldsmith work, carried out by a Cordovan jeweler and goldsmith, includes four gilded corner pieces with amethysts and ivory angel heads. Inside the cross, there is a reliquary decorated with a painting of angels.
The most unique element of the piece is what it holds within: an authentic fragment of rock from Mount Calvary, the place in Jerusalem where, according to the Gospels, Jesus was crucified. This relic was donated by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land and is officially certified. The cross will also function as an itinerant reliquary, allowing for the incorporation of other relics during its journey.
Before its processional debut, scheduled for October 2, 2027, the World Cross will embark on an ambitious international journey. On May 2, 2026, it will be blessed at the Spanish National Church of Santiago and Montserrat in Rome, with the possibility of an audience with Pope Leo XIV. Subsequently, it will visit a stage of the Camino de Santiago in August, the convent of the Order of the Minim Friars in Seville in the autumn, and upon its return to Málaga, the Cathedral, the Basilica of La Victoria, and the parish of San Lázaro. On March 27, 2027, it will also preside over an extraordinary Via Crucis on Mount Calvary.
Alongside the cross, the official poster for the fiftieth anniversary was also presented, also the work of a local artist, in which the Lord of the Steps appears in the foreground against a background representing Mount Calvary. The image was carved in 1977 by a sculptor based on an original head by another artist.
