The festivity of María Auxiliadora Coronada filled the streets of Algeciras with fervor and tradition on May 24th. The procession, one of the most anticipated events by the educational community and the Salesian family, brought together a large number of devotees along its route, reaffirming the celebration's deep roots in local identity.
Preparatory events began days earlier, including a moving children's procession on Thursday, May 21st, led by Primary Education students. The following day, May 23rd, the image of María Auxiliadora was brought down, preceded by an exaltation by Raúl Ocaña, senior brother of the Salesian Brotherhood of Medinaceli, in an atmosphere of prayer and shared sentiment.
From early afternoon on the 24th, the area around the church became a meeting point for current and former students, families, and neighbors, united by the Salesian spirit that imbues these festivities. The procession, enhanced by the presence of mantillas, cherubs, and a marching band, was accompanied by civil and ecclesiastical authorities. The community of Salesians of Don Bosco highlighted the 'excitement, joy, fellowship, and family spirit' that define these days.
The procession's route included emblematic streets such as María Auxiliadora, Alférez García del Valle, Plaza de San Isidro, Calle Gloria, San Antonio, Alfonso XI, the bustling Plaza Alta, Santísimo, Muñoz Cobos, Rocha, Sevilla, and Montereros, blending the solemnity of the event with the daily life of the urban center.
The return to the church followed the traditional route, concluding amidst expressions of contained emotion. The intergenerational participation of young people, families, and devotees underscored how devotion is passed down as a living part of local identity.
In this context, the Association of Devotees of María Auxiliadora Coronada of Algeciras has announced the call for the 1st María Auxiliadora on the Street Photography Contest, aiming to capture the procession scheduled for May 24, 2026, and to highlight the Virgin's presence and the atmosphere of faith and coexistence.
The day concluded with the image of a city fully engaged with a tradition that strengthens its community bonds each year, embodying the spirit of María Auxiliadora as a symbol of hope, closeness, and shared joy.
