The Junta de Andalucía has officially informed the town councils of Villanueva de Córdoba and Alcaracejos of the inclusion of two historical sites in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage (Cgpha), granting them the highest category of legal protection as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) under the monument typology.
These designations recognize the heritage value of the petroglyphs of Tablilla del Mellado, located in Villanueva de Córdoba and dating back to the Bronze Age, as well as the Neolithic cave paintings near the Sierra de la Chimorra in Alcaracejos.
The discoveries, announced via social media, highlight the work of the archaeologists who found and studied these remains. In the case of Villanueva de Córdoba, the petroglyphs, studied by Silverio Gutiérrez, Juan Palomo, and Juan Gómez, depict a Bronze Age human sacrifice, with schematic figures engraved on a reddish slate.
Meanwhile, the cave paintings in Alcaracejos, representative of the Neolithic and Metal Ages, were reported to the Culture Delegation by archaeologist Fernando Penco in 2024, culminating now in their classification as a monument.
