The Governing Council of the Junta de Andalucía has ratified the emergency declaration for repair works on port infrastructures under its management, which were affected by a series of storms between January and February 2026. The province of Almería was among the most severely impacted by these weather events.
According to a statement from the Junta, the Ministry of Public Works, Territorial Planning and Housing, through the Public Agency of Ports of Andalucía (APPA), is carrying out a set of actions as part of a global package totaling 6.9 million euros (VAT included). This plan includes 35 interventions at various points along the Andalusian coast.
In the case of Almería, the temporals associated with storms Joseph, Kristin, Leonardo, and Marta caused significant damage to both port infrastructures and buildings linked to fishing and commercial activities. Intense wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and subsequent water discharges led to water infiltration and structural stability issues.
Among the most notable actions in the province is the intervention at the Garrucha fish market, where damage to facades and roofs has been detected due to adverse weather conditions. These repairs are crucial to ensure the safety and normal operation of port activities.
Additionally, work is being carried out on the security systems of the access tunnel to the commercial port of Garrucha. This infrastructure is vital, with over 1,000 trucks passing through it daily. The objective of these actions is to reinforce safety conditions following the effects of the storms.
These interventions in Almería are part of the emergency works promoted by the Junta to restore the operability of affected regional ports, secure infrastructures, and minimize the impact on the economic activity linked to the maritime-port sector.
