The municipality of Villanueva del Arzobispo, in Jaén, has launched an ambitious tree-planting plan in collaboration with the University of Jaén (UJA), which includes planting over 2,000 trees to eliminate 600 kilograms of air pollutants annually.
This initiative aims to combat air quality problems, reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, and advance environmental sustainability in the municipality. The European Union had previously identified Villanueva del Arzobispo as one of the most polluted localities on the continent, which spurred a joint Action Plan by the Junta de Andalucía and the City Council.
The project, titled 'Management and Improvement Plan for the Tree Population of San Blas Park and Green Areas of Villanueva del Arzobispo: Valuation of Ecosystem Services, Air Quality Improvement, and Adaptation to Climate Change,' has already increased the municipality's tree coverage by 7% in eleven new green areas. Among the more than 2,000 trees planted, 1,000 are elm trees free of Dutch elm disease, restoring an emblematic species to the area.

"The proposed objectives have been satisfactorily achieved, and the action will improve the locality's resilience to the challenges of climate change and industrial activity that Villanueva faces."
According to the UJA, this new tree planting allows for the direct elimination of 600 kilograms of air pollutants annually, including PM2.5 and PM10 particles, in addition to sequestering 21.9 tons of carbon per year. The 200,000 euro funding comes from the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, obtained after achieving one of the highest national scores in a competitive public call for green projects. Grupo Consule, an independent technical office, supported the council in seeking funding and technical project management.
With a 12-month execution period, the plan focuses on improving existing green areas, especially San Blas Park, expanding municipal tree cover to optimize CO₂ capture and ecosystem services, and applying advanced technologies such as satellite imagery, climate sensors, and soil analysis for sustainable management.

"This initiative is part of the City Council's commitment to public health and the fight against climate change, as well as to the adaptation of Villanueva del Arzobispo to the environmental challenges of the 21st century. This project represents a firm step in protecting our environment and the quality of life of our residents. Thanks to the collaboration with the University of Jaén, the participation of Grupo Consule as technical support, and the funding from the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, we will be able to move towards a greener, healthier, and more resilient municipality."
