This initiative, promoted by the Center for Renaissance Studies (CERU), the UNED, and the Úbeda City Council, aims to become a national benchmark in the dissemination of Renaissance heritage and in the international projection of the city, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The congress, recently presented at the Úbeda Tourist Office, has a strong commemorative character. According to a municipal representative, the initiative seeks to «pay tribute to two key moments in our history: the arrival of Emperor Charles I in Úbeda and the birth of Francisco de los Cobos, two figures closely linked to the identity of our city».
“"We want this congress to mark a before and after in our cultural programming, to project the image of Úbeda within and beyond our borders, and to strengthen the sense of belonging among our residents."
Beyond a traditional academic gathering, the program will include plenary lectures, round tables, and communications from specialists, with university credits endorsed by UNED Central. Additionally, guided tours, scenic proposals, gastronomic experiences, and a recreation of the emperor's banquet will be offered, allowing attendees to experience the Renaissance firsthand. The closing ceremony will feature the participation of the Ducal Medinaceli Foundation.
Among the confirmed experts is a curator from the Prado Museum, who will address the relevance of Renaissance painting. The program will also explore novel perspectives on the era, such as the role of women in the 16th century, enriching the analysis of Charles I's Spain from multiple angles.
Registration, which will open soon, will have an accessible fee of 25 euros, with facilities for students and other groups, in line with the congress's aim to be an event «for the people, to be experienced in the streets, to be enjoyed».
