AFA Vejer receives adapted van thanks to a 55,000 euro grant

The Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's Patients of Vejer (AFA Vejer) has incorporated a new adapted vehicle, funded with 55,000 euros from the Provincial Council of Cadiz, to improve user transportation.

The brand-new adapted van from AFA Vejer, featuring nine conventional seats and space for two wheelchair users, will facilitate the transportation of elderly individuals with dementia between their homes and the Nuestra Señora de la Oliva day center. The acquisition was made possible by a 55,000 euro grant from the Provincial Council of Cadiz.
The vehicle is equipped with a ramp to simplify the entry and exit of people with reduced mobility. Its service will cover the urban area of Vejer, its rural zone, and other municipalities in the La Janda region, including Benalup-Casas Viejas, Medina Sidonia, and Barbate.

The president of the Provincial Council of Cadiz, Almudena Martínez, handed over the vehicle to María del Carmen Mejías, president of AFA Vejer, on September 14th. The event was also attended by several staff members from the Nuestra Señora de la Oliva center, managed by the association and with a capacity for 40 users.
The need to renew the transport fleet arose due to recurring breakdowns in the previous vehicles. With this new unit, the association believes its user transportation needs are covered, with individuals being picked up from their homes and taken to the day center, as well as the return journey.
Furthermore, the vehicle will be used to enable family members and caregivers to participate in leisure activities while patients receive care, an initiative framed within the objective of "caring for the caregivers," according to Mejías.
This funding is part of the agreements between the Provincial Council and AFA Vejer for 2026. The provincial institution also allocates 17,452 euros to cover two additional places at the day center, bringing the total amount for both agreements to 72,452 euros. These places complement those contracted with the Andalusian Agency for Social Services and Dependency, and cover socio-sanitary care, psychosocial activities, cognitive stimulation, and transport.
Almudena Martínez highlighted that the collaboration was managed through the Social Services Area of the Provincial Council, led by councilor Paula Conesa, linking the investment to direct care for people with dementia and support for their families.
María del Carmen Mejías reiterated the practical importance of the new means of transport for maintaining the center's daily activities and thanked the provincial funding, emphasizing that the association had been identifying this need for some time.
