The municipality of Vélez-Málaga joins the celebration of LGTBIQ+ Pride Month with an extensive agenda of cultural and awareness-raising activities to be held throughout June. The official presentation was made by the Councilor for Social Rights and Equality, Juan García, and the president of the Axarquía LGTBIQ+ association, Antonio Lara.
The program will kick off on Saturday, June 6, with a free bus service to facilitate residents' travel to the Torremolinos Pride demonstration, with a reminder that a few spots are still available.
On June 20, at 7:00 PM, the II Axarquía Diversa David Valverde Awards gala will take place at the Center for Studies on Exile. These awards recognize the trajectory of collectives and institutions dedicated to equality. This year's honorees include Francisco Quintero (Canal Málaga) for communication, CEIP Antonio Checa of Torre del Mar in education, the Higher School of Dramatic Art of Málaga for its activism, and a shared 'Orgullo de Pueblo' award for the Iznate City Council, Bar Andalucía, and the local LGTBI collective. The Nerja Cave Foundation will receive an honorable mention.
The gala will be hosted by the Torremolinos LGTB Choir and drag artist Driana Kournikova, with the after-party held on Las Monjas street.
Local culture will take center stage on June 25 with a micro-theater showcase performed by students from the association's performing arts workshop, presented in two sessions at the Social Rights and Equality facilities.
The month of diversity will conclude on June 26 with the III Pride of Vélez-Málaga. The main event will be the premiere and screening at Cinesur El Ingenio of a short film created by students from IES Reyes Católicos, a project born from affective-sexual awareness workshops held in classrooms during the school year.
