The new facilities, located at Avenida de los Fenicios, 2, in Algarrobo Costa, were inaugurated by the president of the Diputación de Málaga, Francisco Salado, alongside the mayor of Algarrobo, Natacha Rivas, in an event attended by mayors and council members from various towns in the region.
Salado highlighted the institutional collaboration between the Diputación de Málaga, the Junta de Andalucía, and the Ayuntamiento de Algarrobo as crucial for the center's launch, aiming to enhance the well-being of citizens in the town and the other 18 municipalities it will cover.
The municipalities that will benefit from this new center are: Algarrobo, Almáchar, Árchez, Arenas, Benamargosa, Benamocarra, El Borge, Canillas de Aceituno, Canillas de Albaida, Cómpeta, Cútar, Frigiliana, Iznate, Macharaviaya, Moclinejo, Salares, Sayalonga, Sedella, and Totalán.
This center replaces the previous one located in Torrox, as the latter has exceeded the population threshold of 20,000 inhabitants, beyond which the Diputación does not directly provide this service.
The Diputación de Málaga has invested 260,000 euros in adapting the main entrance and the first floor of the building. It will house a team of 23 professionals, including social workers, educators, psychologists, and administrative staff, who will serve as a reference center and a point of contact for the provincial institution's Equality and Employment programs in La Axarquía.
Last year, the Social Services basic zone of Axarquía Costa Oriental conducted 4,838 technical interventions, providing information, assessment, guidance, and advice through interviews, home visits, and administrative tasks.
Furthermore, the Home Help Service assisted 1,334 users with dependency needs, covering their basic personal and domestic requirements, and offering support to families and caregivers to enable the elderly to remain in their municipalities.
Within the dependency care program, in collaboration with the Junta de Andalucía, 1,403 interventions were carried out. For families with minors, 316 family units were supported through workshops on emotional health, bullying prevention, and healthy eating.
A total of 242 reports were drafted for the area's town councils concerning food aid, integration of migrants, emergency social assistance, and vulnerability assessments.
The center will also manage the DIPMA CONCILIA program, which facilitates work-life balance through activities during school holidays, in partnership with the Ministry of Equality and the Regional Ministry of Equality. Municipalities such as Algarrobo, Árchez, El Borge, Canillas de Albaida, Competa, Cútar, Macharaviaya, Moclinejo, Sayalonga, and Totalán have already participated.
Thanks to European funds, the DIMATEC project has equipped the Community Social Services with advanced technological resources, including tablets, electronic notebooks, and multi-screen laptops.
Finally, Francisco Salado announced the launch this year in La Axarquía of the project ‘Our elderly never alone’, which will introduce robotics and accessible technology into the homes of elderly individuals living alone.
