The moscatel grape harvest campaign in Axarquía faces a severe setback due to continuous high temperatures. Initial estimates from the Association of Young Farmers (Asaja) of Málaga suggest losses could reach nearly 40% of the expected production, particularly affecting key municipalities like El Borge and Almáchar.
Fruit deterioration has become evident after a prolonged heatwave, causing significant dehydration. The agricultural organization has highlighted the need for a technical inspection to accurately determine the consequences of thermal stress on the crop. "A field technical assessment will be necessary to more precisely determine the extent of the damage," stated an Asaja spokesperson.
These projections contrast with initial expectations, which pointed towards a more favorable campaign than the previous year. The combination of extreme heat and water loss in the fruit has drastically altered prospects in recent days, impacting a crop of great economic, social, and cultural importance to the region.

In light of this situation, Asaja Málaga has formally requested the Delegation of Agriculture for an official damage assessment. "It is crucial for administrations to act swiftly," emphasized the association, underscoring the importance of this crop to the territory and its vulnerability to adverse weather conditions.
The president of Asaja Málaga, Baldomero Bellido, explained that farmers began the campaign with optimism, but the heat has completely changed the scenario. The organization will continue to monitor the harvest's evolution during the initial stages of the moscatel grape collection and will maintain contact with producers and the administration to assess the final impact of the heat on the campaign.
