The project views free time as a fundamental right and an essential channel for the personal, social, and emotional development of children with hearing disabilities. Recreational, cultural, and nature-based activities are adapted to eliminate communication barriers and promote inclusion.
Luis Jesús García-Lomas, manager of the Fundación Caja Rural de Jaén, praised the initiative, calling it "an ideal path for education in values and emotional well-being." He highlighted that the program fosters "a more inclusive and diversity-respecting society in Jaén" by providing an environment where minors can interact without limitations.
This initiative continues AFAIS's work and involves weekly outings planned between March and June. Activities are organized in small groups to ensure individualized attention, adapting dynamics to the specific needs and ages of participants. Through contact with the natural environment and cultural events, the project aims for minors to explore new situations on equal terms, building self-confidence and progressively developing social skills.
AFAIS Jaén operates on the premise that accessible and safe recreational environments are crucial for breaking down communication barriers. The sessions promote values such as respect, empathy, and teamwork. Furthermore, the project encourages active participation from parents on certain days to strengthen emotional bonds and improve communication channels at home.
“"This project addresses a long-standing demand from families by offering safe socialization spaces where hearing impairment does not lead to exclusion."
Rocío Fernández, president of AFAIS Jaén, emphasized that direct observation of children's progress in self-esteem and sense of belonging is the most reliable indicator of the program's necessity.
