Between April 13 and 19, Jaén's Local Police, in coordination with the DGT, implemented an intensive speed control campaign on the city's roads. During this period, 1,935 vehicles were monitored, of which 174 were sanctioned for exceeding the permitted speed. This figure indicates that approximately one in ten intercepted drivers was traveling above the legal limits, a statistic that highlights a persistent problem in local road culture.
The issue of excessive speed is not exclusive to Jaén. Nationally, consolidated data for 2024 reveal that inappropriate speed was a determining factor in 307 fatal accidents, representing a 5.5 percent increase compared to the previous year. This factor ranks as the third most common element in traffic accidents, being present in over 20 percent of crashes with fatalities, making its control a priority for road safety authorities.
“"Compliance with speed limits is not only a legal obligation but a key issue to ensure the safety of all road users. The City Council continues to bet on awareness and surveillance as fundamental tools to reduce accident rates in the city."
Municipal authorities in Jaén emphasize the importance of combining surveillance with public awareness to promote responsible driving. The councilor for Local Police and Transport has reminded that behind every statistic there are lives that can be saved with prudent driving, appealing to the individual responsibility of each driver. These periodic campaigns, coordinated nationally but executed locally, aim to reinforce prevention and awareness, especially on urban roads and conventional highways, where the consequences of excessive speed are particularly severe due to the greater presence of pedestrians and cyclists.
