The processing for the regularization of immigrants, promoted by the Government, has seen a significant response in Jaén. In just a few days since its opening, the City Council, through its Social Affairs Board, has counted over 200 applications. This figure was highlighted by the councilor for the area during the April plenary session.
“"Last week, in just two days, we already had over 200 applications. We have organized with social workers, including those from the Homeless Shelter, which operates year-round, and professionals from the Migra program, as well as all those in community social services, to handle these requests exclusively in Jaén capital."
The city council has clarified that municipal work focuses on processing reports related to the vulnerability of applicants. Requests linked to family reunification or arguments of rootedness are not handled by municipal technicians.
The process has been designed to be agile, with a deadline until June 30. The councilor emphasized the priority of being as quick as possible, highlighting the simplicity of the reports, which must be validated by municipal social workers. To facilitate this management, there is collaboration with specialized associations and unions, such as Jaén Acoge, as well as support from the Red Cross. Interested parties can request appointments at post offices, the Immigration Service, or the Social Security.
However, this initiative has raised concerns in other instances. The president of the Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP) has expressed concern about the increased workload this new regulation is creating for Andalusian city councils. He noted an unusual increase in inquiries to local entities, which is straining municipal services, especially Community Social Services, which often operate with limited resources.
