The city of Jaén has officially inaugurated the Don Bosco Square in the Polígono del Valle neighborhood. The ceremony, presided over by Mayor Julio Millán, was attended by Deputy Mayor María Espejo, members of the Municipal Corporation, and the Bishop of the Diocese, Sebastián Chico, honoring the social, educational, and community presence and commitment of the Salesian community in the Jaén capital for over half a century.
During the event, a commemorative monolith was unveiled, created by the Urban Maintenance team, featuring a stone carving of Saint John Bosco by the stonemasonry section. The square is officially named Don Bosco, recognizing 54 years of service by the Salesian community in Jaén, as read by María Espejo, who thanked the congregation's dedication to the neighborhood's residents.
The parish priest of San Juan Bosco, Juan Carlo Macías, expressed gratitude to the City Council for this institutional gesture, calling it a recognition of the «educational and evangelizing work» that the Salesians began in Jaén in 1970, assisting orphaned minors and vulnerable youth.
Mayor Millán emphasized the «profound social and educational importance» of the Salesians in the Polígono del Valle, a neighborhood known for its strong community identity. He highlighted the Salesian community's contribution to «the dignity of people» and its role as a reference point for youth training and support. The mayor also acknowledged key figures like «Pepe el cura», defining him as «an indispensable person in building a solidary Jaén and the Third Sector».
Throughout their 54-year presence in the city, thousands of individuals have participated in various educational, social, and pastoral initiatives promoted by the Salesian community, the parish, the Don Bosco Foundation, and the youth movement. Their work continues today through programs for food support, youth guidance, socio-labor insertion, and assistance to vulnerable individuals.
