The province of Jaén has become the first in Andalusia to complete the implementation and launch of the new v48 version of the corporate PDI (Pruebas Diagnósticas por Imagen - Diagnostic Imaging Tests) system across all its Andalusian Health Service (SAS) centers. This technological tool is designed to improve healthcare by allowing patients to undergo their diagnostic tests at the facility closest to their home.
The implementation process, concluded in April, was led by the Implementation Team of the Directorate of Information Systems of the DGTIC and the Provincial TIC Team of Jaén. These teams worked jointly with the Radiodiagnosis, Nuclear Medicine departments, Medical Directorates, and Managements of all healthcare centers in the province to manage the technical and organizational aspects.
This project involved a thorough review and adaptation of all diagnostic imaging test catalogs in the province. A complex referral matrix was created among healthcare centers to ensure that each patient receives care at the nearest and most appropriate location according to the required test.
Previously, the system only allowed tests to be requested within the same center where the physician attended the patient. The new version, however, can automatically refer each test to the healthcare center closest to the patient's home that has the necessary technology. For instance, a patient from Baeza seen at the San Juan de la Cruz Hospital could have a simple X-ray at their health center if it has the adequate equipment. For a contrast MRI, they would be referred to the Úbeda hospital, and for more specialized tests like a densitometry, to the Jaén University Hospital. Even for highly complex tests not available in the province, the system allows automatic referrals to Andalusian reference hospitals such as those in Córdoba, Granada, or Sevilla.
The launch of this new model required months of technical work, reviews, and agreements between centers to correctly define the care circuits and ensure the safety of referrals. The final rollout occurred without significant incidents, thanks to the coordination among all involved professionals and the technical support from the project's contracting companies, INDRA and AYESA.
Through this project, the province of Jaén leads in Andalusia a system that improves accessibility, reduces unnecessary travel, and facilitates healthcare that is closer, more efficient, and centered on patient needs.
