The Paseo de las Bicicletas in Jaén became the stage this Friday for the ‘Verbena de los Mayores’ (Seniors' Festival), the main event of the ‘Primavera Activa: Mayores en Movimiento’ (Active Spring: Seniors in Motion) program, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2026. The initiative, designed by the Municipal Patronage of Social Services and the Municipal Popular University, brought together seniors from the city's three Municipal Active Participation Centers and five Community Social Services Centers for an afternoon of coexistence, music, and celebration.
The mayor of Jaén, Julio Millán, accompanied by the Councilor for Social Services, Ángeles Díaz, and the UPM councilor, José Manuel Higueras, participated in the festival. Mayor Millán highlighted «the importance of promoting activities that foster active aging, social participation, and the well-being of older adults». He also committed that the City Council will continue «promoting policies for participation and healthy leisure aimed at seniors, encouraging spaces for intergenerational coexistence and strengthening social bonds».
The afternoon's artistic program featured performances by the Tuna del Distrito Universitario de Jaén (University District Tuna), the chirigota (comic musical group) ‘De las pirámides a la parada’, the group FIT DLMC Sonia Delgado, students from the Universidad de los Mayores (UOM) (University of Seniors) with their professor Maite Peinado, the association Tango Jaén, and the Municipal Band of Jaén, which provided the musical finale to a day made especially emotional by the tenth anniversary of the program.
Councilor Ángeles Díaz thanked the participating associations, collectives, and entities for their collaboration, as well as «the great reception this activity receives each year, now in its tenth edition, becoming one of the most anticipated celebrations for the city's seniors». The municipal departments of Urban Planning, Environment, and Citizen Security also collaborated in the organization. The event was sponsored by Jabalcuz Dependencia S.L., and the bar service was managed by the Cofradía de la Buena Muerte (Brotherhood of the Good Death), with its profits destined for the brotherhood's solidarity actions.
