Last Friday, the auditorium of the «Andrés de Vandelvira» Higher Conservatory of Music in Jaén hosted the presentation of Entre coplas y quejíos. This show represents an ambitious reinterpretation of the copla genre, deeply integrating flamenco elements in a renewed way.
The initiative is the result of a joint effort between the faculty and students from the Interpretation and Flamenco specialties of the center. This project consolidates a pedagogical and artistic direction that the conservatory has been developing in previous years, fostering experimentation and the fusion of styles.
Under the artistic direction of Israel Martín, the production achieves a remarkable balance between the power of the orchestra and the intimacy characteristic of the flamenco tablao. The wind orchestra, directed by Jorge Giner, provided an accompaniment of impeccable technical precision, while the flamenco ensemble, with Carmen Yruela and Mónica Mata on vocals and Antonio González on dance, brought an emotional intensity that transformed each number into a unique experience for the audience.
“"This show is proof that this dialogue is not only possible, but necessary to keep our musical identity alive."
The conservatory director highlighted the value of this proposal as a clear example of the fruitful dialogue between classical and flamenco traditions. This initiative joins other successful projects from the center, such as the revision of Lorca's Canciones populares españolas last year or the stage proposal of Falla's El amor brujo in 2024, which also received great acclaim.
