These activities, promoted by the organization's local assemblies, are part of the April 14th commemoration and aim to highlight the historical legacy of the Second Republic. The program will take place in towns such as Trigueros, La Zarza-Perrunal, Aljaraque, and Zalamea la Real.
The calendar of events began on Sunday, April 12th, in Trigueros, where the local group inaugurated a monolith in the municipal cemetery. This monument is dedicated to those killed after the military coup of 1936 for defending the legitimate government, paying homage to those buried in the mass grave and recognizing their democratic commitment.
On April 14th itself, activities will continue in La Zarza-Perrunal with the reading of a manifesto, a minute of silence, and the conference “The II Republic in our municipality,” led by historian Francisco Manuel Núñez. Concurrently, in Aljaraque, a tribute will be held in the municipal cemetery with the placement of a bouquet of flowers at the monolith dedicated to the victims of repression.
In Zalamea la Real, the program will start with a tribute to militants and repressed individuals in the municipal cemetery. Subsequently, the hall of the Teatro Ruiz Tatay will host the conference “History and Memory of the Spanish Second Republic. An approach to Republican Zalamea,” delivered by historian José Manuel Vázquez Lazo, followed by a discussion with attendees.
These activities are not an exercise in nostalgia, but a vindication of the democratic, social, and citizen participation values promoted by the Second Republic.
Izquierda Unida emphasizes that these commemorations aim to reclaim the democratic and social values of the Second Republic, considering it a benchmark in the defense of rights and freedoms. The organization underscores the importance of advancing democratic memory policies, justice, and reparation, and reaffirms its commitment to historical memory and the vision of a future Third Republic.
