The tragic event unfolded when two vessels from the Civil Guard Maritime Service were chasing a speedboat suspected of drug trafficking. The collision proved fatal for one officer immediately, while a second officer succumbed to severe injuries later.
One of the deceased officers, aged 55, had served in the Guardia Civil for 30 years. The institution has expressed profound sorrow over the loss of their colleagues in the line of duty.
“"We regret the death of our colleague in the line of duty following a collision between two vessels of the Civil Guard Maritime Service while pursuing a drug-running speedboat off the coast of Huelva."
In addition to the fatalities, two other officers sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. A spokesperson for the Government in Andalusia stated that their condition is being
“"monitored closely."
With both vessels stranded miles offshore, a helicopter from Cadiz's Maritime Base was deployed to assist in the rescue operation. This incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by officers combating drug trafficking, particularly with the increasing presence of 'narcolanchas' in Andalusian waters. This event echoes a similar tragedy two years prior in Barbate, where two officers also lost their lives.
