A 77-year-old retiree, originally from Derry and who settled in the province of Huelva, finds himself in a desperate situation after his possessions, valued at approximately €50,000, failed to reach their destination in Huelva following a move that began in 2023. The individual, who spent €16,000 on two removal companies, claims to have lost "a lifetime's worth of furniture."
The man, who purchased his dream retirement home near Ayamonte, initially hired JDS Euro Transport & Removals for €7,500 in September 2023, after seeing an advertisement on Facebook. Subsequently, he was informed he needed a second firm, Andrew Ridge & Sons, for an additional €8,500, with the allegation that the latter was "turned back at customs."
“"It's been a complete disaster. I have lost a lifetime worth of furniture. Now all I have of her are memories."
Despite the Turkish embassy in Dublin confirming he had the correct paperwork, nothing has arrived. Northern Irish police have been notified, but detectives state they cannot act as the alleged fraud took place in Turkey.
The affected individual, who has contacted local media after reading about a similar case, stated that despite the ordeal, he is learning Spanish and has not given up on his Spanish retirement dream. He advises other expats to thoroughly research removal companies and avoid upfront payments.
A spokesperson for JDS removals has placed all responsibility on Andrew Ridge & Sons. Meanwhile, Andy Ridge told the press that the client agreed to have his belongings stored but did not pay for it, a claim the affected individual vehemently denies, providing messages that he says confirm his version.
