This tribute, a result of collective effort from institutions and citizens, aims to settle a historical debt with a figure who transcended his own name to become an emblem of the city. The sculpture not only commemorates his artistic career but also his immense generosity and tireless fight for diversity.
Juan Camacho, president of the Antonio Herrera Abrio Pro-Monument Cultural Association, and Andrés González 'el Lepe', the association's spokesperson, have confirmed the anticipated inauguration. The event, scheduled for 12:00 PM, will be attended by authorities and is open to all citizens of Huelva, inviting the “choqueros” to participate in this milestone.
“"On Friday, finally, we inaugurate it at 12:00 PM in the Pío XII roundabout, next to Telefónica. Authorities will be present, but we want to invite all the people of Huelva, of course."
The artwork, created by Huelva-born sculptor Guillermo Barba, represents the duality of Antonio Herrera Abrio: the person and the artistic persona. After a year and a half of intense work, the piece, forged and cast in Valencina de la Concepción, reflects both inseparable facets of his identity. The association highlights their commitment to this young local talent, expressing great satisfaction with the outcome.
The project's funding was made possible through citizen collaboration and the support of various public and private institutions in Huelva, including neighborhood associations. The Huelva City Council played a fundamental role, providing financial contributions and undertaking the construction of the pedestal and the adaptation of the Pío XII roundabout, next to the Plaza de las Jacarandas.
Mayor Pilar Miranda has expressed her enthusiasm for this monument, defining it as a “posthumous tribute to someone who, above all, was a good person.” Miranda emphasized 'La Moni's' charitable nature and her role as a benchmark in advocating for plurality and diversity, ensuring that her legacy will endure in the city's memory.
