The village of El Buitrón, in the Huelva Andévalo region, is set to celebrate its Santa Cruz Festivities from May 1st to 3rd, a tradition documented since 1588, noted for its antiquity and the strong community involvement.

In the heart of the Huelva Andévalo, the small village of El Buitrón, part of the municipality of Zalamea la Real, is gearing up for one of the most significant events on its annual calendar. From May 1st to 3rd, its streets will be transformed to host the Santa Cruz Festivities, a celebration that transcends mere festivity to become a profound cultural and communal expression.
With a history dating back over four centuries, and with the Brotherhood already recognized in 1588, this festivity stands as one of the oldest in the province of Huelva. The tradition has not only endured but has been revitalized through generations thanks to the collective involvement of all residents.
During these days, El Buitrón comes alive with music, vibrant colors, the unmistakable aroma of freshly baked sweets, and a palpable religious fervor. It is a gathering point where former residents return, families reunite, and visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the most authentic essence of these ancient traditions.
One of the most emblematic moments is the “Romero,” a ritual rich in symbolism. On Friday, the steward collects rosemary from the surroundings and places it nearby. On Saturday, accompanied by the other steward and those who join on horseback, a procession begins, culminating with three turns around the Cross and the ascent to the hermitage, where the rosemary is offered amidst ancient songs and an atmosphere of great emotion.
Sunday marks the close of the festivities with the election of the new stewards, a moment of great intensity for those who have dedicated a full year to this responsibility. Being a steward implies constant dedication, effort, and total commitment to the community.
The participation of everyone is the fundamental pillar of these festivities. From the artisanal preparation of typical sweets such as rosas, pestiños, hojuelas, piñonates, or alfajores, to the organization of each event, every inhabitant contributes to keeping this celebration alive. This year's poster, designed by Miguel Montaner, captures this spirit, connecting the Cross, the Flag, rosemary, and wildflowers with spring and rebirth, values intrinsically linked to this deeply rooted festivity of the Andévalo.
The Zalamea la Real Town Council has extended an invitation to the entire province to come and experience this unique celebration firsthand, where tradition, faith, and hospitality intertwine.
