The Regional Government of Andalusia, represented by its first vice-president and counselor of Presidency, Health, and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, officially inaugurated the new Community Mental Health Unit of Huelva. The event was also attended by the mayor of Huelva, Pilar Miranda. The new facilities are located on Calle de las Hermandades, moving from its previous location on Plaza Houston.
This center significantly expands its capacity, increasing from eight to 13 consultation rooms. One of the most notable improvements is the implementation of differentiated care circuits for the adult and child-youth population, thus responding to the specific needs of each group. Sanz described the opening as "a very relevant advance in mental health care in Huelva" and a response to the "historic demand from professionals and patients".
The unit has been named after Doctor Onésimo González in recognition of his dedication to the mental health of the citizens of Huelva. The total investment for the launch of this new facility amounted to 606,000 euros, which also allowed for staff reinforcement.
The unit provides specialized care to the population attached to five of the six primary care centers in Huelva capital. Last year, it registered 17,584 consultations, and thanks to organizational and professional efforts, the average waiting time has been significantly reduced by 84% between 2023 and December 2025.
Antonio Sanz concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the opening of the unit "responds to a historic demand" and advances the consolidation of public, community-based, accessible, comprehensive, and humanized mental health care, in line with the I Strategic Plan for Mental Health and Addictions of Andalusia (PESMA-A 2026-2029).
During the event, Sanz also reviewed the advancements in healthcare in Huelva over the past eight years, mentioning an increase of almost 20% in the professional staff (reaching approximately 8,000), the construction of new health centers and clinics, and the progress of the works for the Maternal and Child Hospital, which has a budget of 85 million euros and a constructed area of over 36,000 square meters.
Since 2019, the Regional Government of Andalusia has invested 226 million euros in improving healthcare infrastructure in the province of Huelva, of which 39 million euros correspond to this year. This figure is almost eleven times the investment made by the PSOE in the province during the 2011-2018 period.
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by the delegate of the Regional Government in Huelva, Berta Centeno; the managing director of the SAS, María de los Ángeles García Rescalvo; and the manager of the Juan Ramón Jiménez Hospital, Manuel García de la Vega, among other authorities.
