Drownings continue to be one of the leading causes of accidental death during the summer season. The combination of peak swimming season, high temperatures, and increased leisure activities in aquatic environments such as beaches, pools, reservoirs, or rivers elevates the risk of fatal incidents.
In Andalusia, 107 drowning victims were recorded last year, with 11 occurring in the province of Granada. This year, data as of August 7th shows seven fatalities in the province and 26 managed emergencies.
In addition to drownings, diving into shallow or inappropriate waters causes severe injuries, including head trauma, fractures, and spinal cord injuries. Emergencias Andalucía recommends diving with arms extended forward for protection and always following safety rules and signage.
The campaign 'Don't wait to see it in the news. In water, carelessness leads to emergencies,' promoted by the Andalusian Emergency Agency (EMA), aims to raise awareness about risky behaviors and encourage self-protection and constant supervision of minors. The Government delegate, Antonio Granados, along with the mayor of Almuñécar, Juan José Ruiz, presented this initiative in La Herradura.
Specialists emphasize that most of these accidents can be avoided by respecting signs, swimming in authorized and supervised areas, avoiding alcohol consumption, not diving after eating or prolonged sun exposure, and constantly supervising minors and vulnerable individuals.
