In recent years, seminaries have observed an increase in the number of aspirants, reaching a stabilization phase. A spokesperson for the San Cecilio Major Seminary of Granada noted that since 2006, the number of seminarians has doubled, from approximately eight or nine to sixteen or seventeen currently. Each year, the entry and ordination of new members balance out, maintaining a consistent number.
This phenomenon is attributed to several factors, among which the role of social media stands out. These platforms have made it possible to visualize the lives of priests and dismantle previous stereotypes. Furthermore, the opening of seminaries to the community, through activities such as sports tournaments or open days, encourages greater public participation and awareness.
“"Social media is making it possible to access or visualize the life of a priest and also to eliminate many stereotypes that may have existed in other eras."
Proximity is another fundamental pillar in spreading the vocation. The ease with which information now propagates through mobile devices allows devotion and vocation to reach a wider audience. For those responsible, this social awareness is crucial, as the priest's mission involves being present in the community, listening, comforting, and offering hope, as well as addressing individual needs.
The training of future priests extends far beyond the academic realm. Although the study of theology is essential, it is complemented by solid human preparation. This preparation aims to form mature, balanced, and focused individuals, including psychological, social, and relational disciplines, along with intense spiritual formation, all considered vital for their future ministry.
