Although the nesting of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is not a common phenomenon on the Granada coast, there has been an increase in cases in other Mediterranean areas such as Almería and Málaga. The period during which these animals may come ashore runs from mid-May to mid-September.
In the event of any discovery, whether it is an adult specimen, a hatchling, or simply tracks left in the sand, authorities recommend contacting 112 immediately. It is essential to provide the exact location and protect the area until specialized personnel arrive to avoid disturbing the animals.
The Granada coastline has been the scene of previous rescues. In October 2024, two specimens were released at La Herradura beach after recovering at the CEGMA center in Algeciras. Additionally, in December of the same year, the Guardia Civil rescued another turtle trapped in fishing nets near cabo Sacratif.
