The Coast of Granada has had its coastline's quality recognized with the award of 15 Blue Flags and the designation of the Sendero Miradores y Acantilados de Torrenueva as the province's first Blue Trail.
The Association of Environmental Education and Consumer (Adeac) granted these distinctions, which assess water quality, safety, services, accessibility, and environmental management of beaches. Playa de Poniente in Motril regains this award after several years, and the Sendero Miradores y Acantilados de Torrenueva debuts as a Blue Trail.
The territorial delegate for Tourism, Culture, and Sport, David Rodríguez, presented the flags at an event in Motril. Rodríguez emphasized that these accolades position Granada as a benchmark for tourism and environmental quality on the Andalusian coast.
“
"This is one of the most prestigious international awards in the tourism and environmental sector, consolidating Granada as a benchmark of quality on the Andalusian coast."
The 15 Blue Flags are distributed across Torrenueva Costa (Torrenueva and Del Cañón-La Pelá), Almuñécar (La Herradura, Marina del Este beach, San Cristóbal and Velilla, and Marina del Este port), Gualchos (Sotillo-Castell and Cambriles), Motril (Calahonda, Carchuna, Playa Granada, and Playa Poniente), and Salobreña (La Guardia).
The recovery of Playa de Poniente was highlighted by Rodríguez as a significant milestone, particularly after storm damage, thanks to implemented investments. This stretch of sand is once again ranked among the country's best beaches.
The designation of a Blue Trail for the Sendero Miradores y Acantilados de la Costa signifies a commitment to sustainability. This route, recognized in 2023 as Spain's Best Trail by Fadmes, combines environmental and landscape value.
The Blue Trails program by Adeac aims to reward the restoration of routes that promote environmental education and heritage respect. Sustainability initiatives by the Ministry of Tourism and Andalucía Exterior have involved an investment exceeding 87 million euros.
“
"this recognition highlights "the high quality and service provision of our beaches, which undoubtedly impacts the tourist offer of the province of Granada and the memories of those who decide to spend their summer days on our Costa Tropical"."
The Deputy of Tourism and Heritage, Marta Nievas, emphasized the quality of services and their impact on tourism. She also mentioned the strategic project 'Senda del Litoral' by the Provincial Council, which will connect the Granada coastline.
The mayor of Motril, Luisa García Chamorro, expressed pride in regaining the Blue Flag for Playa de Poniente, noting that Motril's selection as the host city symbolizes the efforts made along its coastline.
