The Archdiocese of Granada announced the temporary closure of the Cathedral, an old and vulnerable building, following recent seismic activity. The decision comes as they await assessment of the extent of possible damage to the structure.
As a precautionary measure, Eucharistic celebrations previously held at the Cathedral are now being moved to the parish of El Sagrario, an adjacent space that has already been inspected and is open to the public. Daily masses at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, as well as the Sunday Eucharist at 12:30 PM presided over by Archbishop José María Gil Tamayo, will take place in this parish until safety is guaranteed for the main temple's reopening.
Furthermore, the ecclesiastical institution has reported the reopening of other spaces that had been preventively closed the previous Tuesday. These include the headquarters of the Metropolitan Curia, the Monastery of La Cartuja, the Abbey of Sacromonte, and the Monastery of San Jerónimo.
Other churches such as those of Saints Justo and Pastor, Santo Domingo, Corpus Christi, and San Matías have also been affected by the earthquakes, adding to the list of religious buildings under review.
