The Granada City Council has launched an initiative to promote carpooling among its municipal employees. Through an agreement with the Granada-based carpooling platform Mube, the aim is to reduce pollutant emissions from work-related travel.
Civil servants who use carpooling will receive an incentive of 6 cents per kilometer and passenger. This sustainable mobility aid, not directly funded by the council but financed through Energy Saving Certificates (CAE), will be managed via a dedicated mobile application. Passengers, on the other hand, will travel for free.
The government team's spokesperson, Jorge Saavedra, explained that this collaboration, already successfully implemented in other cities and with entities like the University of Granada, aligns with the municipal commitment to "more sustainable, efficient mobility adapted to the reality of Granadans."
Saavedra highlighted that the solution not only reduces traffic and CO2 emissions but also allows municipal employees to save and optimize their daily commutes. "It's about utilizing empty seats in vehicles already on the road to create a shared mobility alternative, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable city," he added, emphasizing the commitment to solutions that combat climate change.
The Mube platform, which combines sustainability, technology, and profitability, was awarded the Granada for Entrepreneurs Award in the Business Initiative category last February. The agreement is part of the City Council's Sustainable Mobility Plan and includes the future development of a unique usage code for municipal employees to calculate CO2 savings.
The spokesperson concluded by stating that the City Council "will always support innovative solutions that contribute to citizen well-being and promote urban sustainability, transforming mobility habits on a large scale and moving towards a smarter city committed to the future."
